Mystery Chronicles: One Way Heroics an upcoming release from Spike Chunsoft (Shiren the Wanderer, Zero Escape series, Danganronpa series), is headed to North America sometime this summer.
It’s a bit of an interesting premise: an auto-scrolling roguelike. Not sure what the hell that means? The world is coming to end (naturally) and the only way to stop it is to keep moving right as a wall of light, called the Shine Raid, will continually move from the left of the screen with every action you take. Slow down enough for it to catch you and it’s the end of the road for that hero and world. When your falls in battle, unlike in most roguelikes, you’re not starting at square one. Your previous characters accumulated points and gear will be stored in the Dream Vault. The Dream Vault will allow your next hero to equip better gear and unlock new classes, abilities, and NPC’s. Each time you start again, you’ll be facing an entirely new map, meaning you’ll likely never memorize any “tricks” to overcoming the world (and if you do, your brain is insane at calculations and you should stop playing video games and go tell someone at MIT about it).
There’s also a PvP mode that lets you pit your character against another person’s. There are passwords that you can share that will allow others to explore worlds you’ve been through, meaning you can start entering in passwords for worlds that have some great loot to beef up whatever hero you’re on at the moment. You can even bother your Twitter followers with your progress with integrated updates.
Also, if you’re a fan of some of Spike Chunsoft’s other titles, some characters from Danganronpa and Shiren the Wanderer will also make cameos. Some of the classes you can unlock, a total of twenty different classes, are also inspired by those series.
Mystery Chronicles: One Way Heroics is set to launch this summer for the PC via Steam and the Playstation 4 and Vita this summer. The Playstation 4 and Vita version will be $14.99 and cross-buy (couldn’t find anything on it being cross-save, but I would imagine it will support it). The Steam version will be $9.99 and will support Steam Cloud, trading cards, and achievements.
Between this and NECROPOLIS, the summer is looking sweet for fans of the roguelike genre.
