As a fan of both Mortal Kombat and Injustice: Gods Among Us, as well as the DC Comics Universe (albeit more casual) I’ve been wanting to cover the announcement of Injustice 2 for a while now. It always seemed to get pushed to the bottom of the list though, but with multiple trailers having released now, I figure it’s the perfect time to take a look at how Injustice 2 is shaping up.
If you’re unfamiliar, Injustice is a series of fighting games based on the fictional DC Comics Universe. You can take control of a variety of heroes and villains from a number of different DC Comics including Batman, Superman, The Joker, and more. Developed by NetherRealm, the studio behind the Mortal Kombat series, it has quite the pedigree and the first game, Gods Among Us, was both a critical and commercial success.
After the success of Gods Among Us, Injustice 2 seemed all but a sure thing and it was finally revealed during the lead up to E3 earlier this year. This time around NetherRealm is changing things up a bit, with the biggest addition to Injustice 2 being the “gear system.” This will be a loot-dropping system that will allow you to acquire gear specific to each character, making each customizable to your play style. Included in the gear will be costume pieces and other equipment that will not only change the way the character looks, but also modify attributes such as strength, defense, health, and more. There will also be items that will enable you to unlock more moves. It’s been announced that each character will have over 1,000 pieces of gear available to acquire. If you prefer a more traditional experience, there will be plenty of options that will prohibit the use of gear including a variety of online matchmaking options.
Warner Bros. Interactive has declared that Injustice 2 will have the “biggest DC roster ever offered in a fighting game.” It will feature both characters returning from Gods Among Us and characters new to the game series. It was also announced that more characters would be available after launch via downloadable content. As of right now, the following characters have been confirmed for Injustice 2: Aquaman, Atrocitus, Batman, Blue Beetle, Deadshot, The Flash, Gorilla Grodd, Harley Quinn, Supergirl, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Check out the following trailers for a closer look at some of the characters in action.
Injustice 2 is looking like it’ll be a blast and if it makes a significant jump in quality from Gods Among Us, similar to the one made between Mortal Kombat (2011) and Mortal Kombat X, then this could be one the best fighting games ever released. Of course, that’s all just hyperbole as this point, but it looks like it’s moving in the right direction.
You can expect to play Injustice 2 at some point in 2017 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Keep checking back here at GAJ for the latest Injustice 2 news as we get it.
