Fan of Sonic or not, things aren’t looking great for Sega’s decades old mascot these days. The latest release in the Sonic series, Sonic Boom, saw the lowest sales numbers for the “edgy” hedgehog. To date, the Wii U and the 3DS version, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystals, have sold 490,000 copies. Combined.
Sega isn’t saying if that’s units shipped or units sold, which could mean actual units sold to consumers could be even less than that.
Want a little comparison? The most recent Sonic game, Sonic Lost World, also for the Wii U and 3DS, sold a total of 710,000 copies. Pretty big decline. Even bigger decline from Sonic Colors, which sold 2.18 million units for the Wii and DS.
Sega also recently announced a heavy round of layoffs (totaling around 300) and a move to concentrate on their resources on PC and mobile platforms. Things aren’t looking to great for Sega in general these days.
